A meeting of foreign ministers from the Quad nations of Japan, the United States, Australia and India is underway in New Delhi.
Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar kicked off the meeting on Friday morning.
The gathering followed the Group of 20 foreign ministerial talks that ended on the previous day.
The Quad foreign ministers will likely discuss issues including the situation in the Indo-Pacific as China's hegemonic acts grow.
They are expected to oppose any attempts to change the status quo by force amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. They will likely confirm efforts to maintain and strengthen international order based on the rule of law.
The top diplomats are also likely to agree on plans to advance cooperation on infrastructure development and maritime security to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific.
After the Quad meeting, Hayashi plans to meet separately with Jaishankar and Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly. He plans to request their cooperation on issues related to China and the upcoming G7 meeting in Japan in May.
