France cites Israel's immunity to ICC's arrest warrant for Netanyahu NHK

France has expressed its stance not to cooperate with the International Criminal Court in arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citing Israel's immunity as a non-member state to the court.

France's foreign ministry issued a statement on Wednesday regarding ICC's arrest warrants for Netanyahu, former defense chief Yoav Gallant, and the military head of Hamas.

The ICC issued the warrants on November 21, accusing the Israeli officials of war crimes in the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu and Gallant could be arrested if they visit any of the 124 countries and territories that are parties to the ICC, as the members are obliged to cooperate. Israel is not among them.

The statement says France will have to take into account the Israeli officials' immunity if the ICC requests their arrest.

It added that France intends to continue working in close cooperation with Israeli authorities to achieve peace and security for all in the Middle East.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office issued a statement on Wednesday. It said the ICC's decision to issue the arrest warrants was baseless. It said Israel had submitted an announcement to the ICC regarding its intention to appeal to the court and a demand to delay implementation of the arrest warrants.
