Japan's central and local governments have decided to lift the last remaining evacuation order issued to special reconstruction zones that were created after the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Officials on Monday decided to lift the order for places including a cemetery, a community hall and public roads in Tomioka Town, Fukushima Prefecture, on November 30.

Last month, a group of experts submitted a report saying radiation levels had fallen in these places.

All Tomioka residents were told to evacuate in the immediate aftermath of the accident. Twelve years on, two districts in the town are still designated as "difficult-to-return zones."

The central government has designated special reconstruction and revitalization zones inside these areas and been conducting decontamination works so residents will be able to return.

With the latest decision, all evacuation orders will be lifted in the special zones that exist in six municipalities in the prefecture.

Tomioka Mayor Yamamoto Ikuo says he hopes the lifting of the order will be a springboard for the town's reconstruction and revival.

He also says the town will continue working with the central government and the prefecture to enable residents to return to their former homes.
