Dam in southern Ukraine destroyed, residents evacuating NHK

Ukraine's military announced on Tuesday that a hydroelectric power-generating dam in the country's south has been destroyed by a blast.

The Kakhovka Dam is on the Dnipro River in the southern region of Kherson.

A local governor says residents have begun to evacuate as huge amounts of water are gushing downstream.

The dam in Russian-occupied territory reportedly supplies cooling water to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

The Ukrainian side claims Russian forces destroyed the dam.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has convened a meeting of his national security and defense council to discuss the matter.
