Japan FM Hayashi to attend G7 meeting in Germany NHK

Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa is to attend a Group of Seven ministerial-level meeting in Germany to discuss Ukraine and other topics.

The two-day meeting in Munster, western Germany, will start on Thursday.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is expected to be at the top of the agenda. The ministers are likely to reaffirm that they will work together to continue their sanctions against Russia and their support for Ukraine.

They are also expected to exchange views on China, where President Xi Jinping has begun an historic third term as the country's leader.

Hayashi apparently intends to convey a sense of crisis about China's hegemonic actions and promote enhanced deterrence. He will stress that Japan is the only G7 member from Asia.

Japan and Germany are also scheduled to hold "two-plus-two talks" among their foreign and defense ministers on Thursday.

Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu and his German counterpart will take part online. The four are expected to confirm the need for strengthened security cooperation.
