Bangladesh is facing its worst-ever dengue outbreak. The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease so far this year is five times the figure for the whole of last year. According to the World Health Organization, dengue had claimed over 1,300 lives as of the end of October. More than 267,000 cases have been confirmed. Hospitals in the country's capital are overflowing with dengue patients. Many of them are from rural areas that lack proper medical care. Dengue causes high fever, severe headaches and joint and muscle pain. Scientists say climate change is making dengue a bigger threat in densely populated Bangladesh. Rising temperatures and longer monsoons help mosquitos thrive. They warn the country should prepare for the epidemic to continue.
