Food and drink prices are continuing to rise in Japan with a new survey showing that hikes will affect more than 1,000 items for a second straight month in February. That is mainly due to higher import costs caused by the yen's continued weakness. Private research firm Teikoku Databank polled nearly 200 major domestic food and beverage makers. The results show that the prices of over 1,600 items are set to increase this month. More than a third of them are in the processed-food category, including frozen food and chilled noodles. Condiments such as barbecue sauces account for over 21 percent. Confectionery including cereal products and chocolate make up nearly 20 percent. Teikoku Databank says rising personnel and logistics costs are also driving up prices. The research firm says more than 8,800 items are already set to be more expensive in 2025. It says if price increases continue at the current pace, the cost of about 15,000 to 20,000 items will likely go up this year. That would be far more than last year, when price hikes affected more than 12,000 items. Teikoku Databank says sharp price increases could continue until at least the middle of 2025.
