US and Saudi Arabian mediators say that warring factions in Sudan have agreed to a seven-day ceasefire. It comes after a series of temporary truces have failed to hold. They issued a statement on Saturday saying that Sudan's military and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, signed an agreement during talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The ceasefire is set to take effect on Monday night, local time. The two sides also agreed to carry out humanitarian efforts. A monitoring mechanism comprising representatives from the US, Saudi Arabia and other countries is planned. Whether it can maintain the truce is yet to be seen. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Sudan is worsening. The United Nations says that more than one million people have been displaced due to the conflict.
