The defense chiefs of ASEAN nations and their counterparts from the United States, China and other countries have met and discussed the situation in Ukraine. Russia also joined the talks.
                
The expanded talks of the defense ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations took place in Cambodia on Wednesday.
                
The participants included US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense Onoda Kimi, Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe and Russian Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin.
                
The details of the closed-door meeting are not known. But diplomatic sources say the attendees discussed Russia&#039;s invasion of Ukraine. The US and some other nations apparently criticized Russia.
                
The sources say the attendees also spoke about the situation in Myanmar. The country has been in turmoil since the military coup last year.
                
Myanmar itself was absent from the meeting. The ASEAN side rejected attendance by the military-appointed defense minister.
                
Austin and Wei held bilateral talks on Tuesday ahead of the meeting. The US defense secretary asked China to refrain from actions that could further destabilize the situation surrounding Taiwan.
                
China&#039;s defense ministry said after the talks that Taiwan belongs to China and the issue of Taiwan should be resolved by the Chinese people.
