A summit is underway among the leaders of 18 Pacific island nations and territories. The annual gathering typically includes a dialogue with external partners such as China and the United States. But not this time.
The Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting started on Monday in the Solomon Islands.
Member Australia has pledged about 66 million US dollars to a fund for tackling disaster risks and climate change.
The Solomon Islands did not invite external governments to this year's forum, reportedly after China asked that Taiwan be excluded.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke of the region's geopolitical significance, saying, "There is strategic competition in the Pacific and what we do is treat Pacific Island nations with respect."
Beijing's influence is expanding. In 2019, the Solomon Islands severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China. And earlier this year, the Cook Islands signed an agreement to deepen ties with Beijing, prompting consternation in New Zealand.
The Pacific Island leaders are expected to release a communique when their talks wrap up on Friday.
