Hundreds of people have gathered in central Tokyo to call for an early end to Russia's assault on Ukraine.

A civil group held a rally in Minato Ward on Saturday to mark the second anniversary of the invasion. Organizers said about 500 people participated.

Ukrainian musician Kateryna Gudzii, who lives in Japan, played a native stringed instrument called the bandura. She performed tunes about her home country.

She also sang the popular Japanese song "Tsubasa wo kudasai," which longs for peace and freedom.

Gudzii said time has stopped for Ukrainians over the past two years, during which many have suffered the deaths of their friends.

She noted that war fatigue is spreading around the world, but said Ukraine is fighting not only for itself but for the world, to prevent wars from afflicting other countries.

After the rally, protesters marched through the streets holding placards and Ukrainian flags. They chanted "Peace for Ukraine" or "Against all war."

A man in his 20s who took part said he is a nurse and it is intolerable to hear of the deaths of many children and civilians. He said he worries Japan may face a similar situation someday.

He said he hopes for a peaceful resolution of the war.
