Japan&#039;s Board of Audit says the central government&#039;s spending on the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics totals more than 460 billion yen, or about 3.5 billion dollars, at the current exchange rate. That&#039;s 2.5 times the figure reported by the Games&#039; organizing committee earlier this year.
                
The committee said in June that the total cost of the Games was 1.4238 trillion yen, or about 10.8 billion dollars. It said while the Tokyo Metropolitan Government covered 596.5 billion yen, or about 4.5 billion dollars, of the cost, the central government shouldered 186.9 billion yen, or roughly 1.4 billion dollars.
                
The board says the figure for the state does not include expenses that it should have.
                
Board officials say the costs are those for research and moving facilities related to building the National Stadium.
                
They also point to subsidies for renovating competition venues such as the International Stadium Yokohama, athlete training programs and flights by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force aerobatic team Blue Impulse on the Games&#039; opening days.
                
The officials say the central government spent about 280 billion yen, or about 2.1 billion dollars, more than reported by the committee in June. They say that brings the Games&#039; total cost to nearly 1.7 trillion yen, or about 12.9 billion dollars.
                
The officials called on the government to disclose its expenditures for future large-scale events in a way that is easy for the public to understand.
                
The Japan Sports Agency said the expenses pointed out by the board were included in related budgets. It added that the government will study how to disclose its expenditures.
