Japan's Defense Ministry: N.Korea fires multiple short-range ballistic missiles NHK

Japan's Defense Ministry says North Korea has fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles, and that all are believed to have fallen outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

The ministry says the missiles were fired over a roughly 9-minute period from 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, and that they were launched from near the west coast of North Korea toward the northeast.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were launched from near Sariwon in North Hwanghae Province, in the southwestern part of North Korea.

Japanese defense officials say all the missiles are believed to have fallen into the Sea of Japan near the Korean Peninsula, outside Japan's EEZ.

The officials estimate that at least seven of the missiles reached a maximum altitude of about 100 kilometers and flew about 400 kilometers. They say no damage to ships or aircraft has been confirmed.

North Korea launched what it claimed to be a latest model of an intercontinental ballistic missile last Thursday.

Tuesday's launch is the 13th time this year that Pyongyang has fired ballistic missiles or projectiles that could be ballistic missiles.
