Ukraine presidential office calls meeting on peace proposal 'productive' NHK

Ukraine's presidential office has called an international conference on the country's peace proposal "very productive." The two-day talks ended Sunday.

High-ranking officials of more than 40 countries and international organizations took part in the meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Participants included the Group of Seven nations as well as India, Brazil and other emerging and developing countries collectively called the Global South. China also took part for the first time.

Participants discussed Ukraine's 10-point peace proposal, including the withdrawal of Russian forces and restoration of Ukrainian territory.

The initial meeting took place in June. This time about three times as many participants joined.

Ukraine's presidential office in a statement said the increased number of participants "indicates the world's great interest in establishing a sustainable and lasting peace."

It added, "All the participants demonstrated their countries' commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, international law, and respect for the sovereignty and inviolability of the territorial integrity of states."

Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine's president office, said in a statement, "We had very productive consultations on the key principles on which a just and lasting peace should be built."

Meanwhile, Vladimir Saldo, a pro-Russian official in southern Ukraine's Kherson region, reported in a social media post on Sunday that a major bridge between the region and Crimea had been attacked by missiles.

The bridge connects Russian-controlled parts of Kherson and Crimea, which Russia unilaterally annexed in 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also accused Russian forces of bombing a blood transfusion center in the Kharkiv region in eastern Ukraine, causing casualties.
