Heavy snow forecast for eastern to northern Japan through Sunday evening NHK

A winter pressure pattern and a cold air mass are forecast to bring heavy snow through Sunday evening, mainly to areas along the Sea of Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the winter pressure pattern is bringing a cold air mass with temperatures below minus 30 degrees at an altitude of about 5,500 meters over Japan's main island of Honshu.

Snow is intensifying in some mountainous areas along the Sea of Japan in eastern to northern Japan.

In the six hours though 11 a.m. on Sunday, snowfall reached 21 centimeters in Katsura-aramata, Tsuruoka City in Yamagata Prefecture; 20 centimeters in Haboro Town in Hokkaido Prefecture; and 14 centimeters in Nagataki, Gujo City in Gifu Prefecture and in Tsugawa, Aga Town in Niigata Prefecture.

As of 11 a.m. on Sunday, 151 centimeters of snow had piled up in Yuzawa Town, Niigata Prefecture; 140 centimeters at Aomori Airport in Aomori Prefecture; 131 centimeters in Shirakawa Village, Gifu Prefecture; and 105 centimeters in Kuzuryu, Ono City in Fukui Prefecture.

In the 24 hours through Monday morning, snowfall in mountainous areas could reach 50 centimeters in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region; 40 centimeters in Niigata Prefecture; 30 centimeters in the Hokuriku region; and 20 centimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region.

People are advised to be vigilant against traffic disruptions that may be caused by heavy snow. Weather officials are also urging caution against avalanches, as well as snow that accumulates on power cables and trees.
