Zelenskyy asks France, Germany for more military support NHK

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sought additional military support from France and Germany in a meeting with the two countries' leaders.

Zelenskyy arrived in Paris from London on Wednesday, and held a joint news conference at the Elysee Palace with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Macron said Russia could not be allowed to win the war, and stressed the need to continue military support for Ukraine and its future as long as Russia keeps attacking.

Zelenskyy said he is talking now about the weapons needed for peace. He added that France and Germany have the potential to be game changers.

Scholz referred to his government's decision last month to send German tanks to Ukraine.

He said Germany has backed Ukraine financially, with humanitarian aid and with weapons, and it "will continue to do so as long as necessary."

People in Ukraine are bracing for a possible massive Russian offensive ahead of the one-year anniversary of the invasion on February 24.

The Zelenskyy administration has vowed all-out resistance.
