Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi is traveling to India to attend a meeting of the Group of 20 economies, and to try to increase cooperation between Tokyo and New Delhi on issues such as economic security. During his four-day stay through Saturday in India, Nishimura will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and cabinet ministers in charge of economic affairs. Japan and India are expected to sign an agreement. The document outlines their plans to increase human resource exchanges, strengthen semiconductor supply chains and work together to establish a manufacturing base. India is increasing its presence in the international community. It is also becoming a key player among the emerging and developing countries that are collectively known as the Global South. Japan is eager to strengthen its ties with India, especially in light of China's increasingly hegemonic activities. Nishimura will attend a G20 energy ministers' meeting on Saturday. Energy security and ways to bring about a carbon-free society will be on the agenda. It is also likely that Nishimura will meet with energy ministers from other countries, on the sidelines of the conference. He is expected to seek their understanding for the Japanese government's plan to release treated and diluted water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean around this summer.
