Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, or ABU, has elected head of Turkish state-run TV TRT as the new president and an NHK executive as the vice president.

NHK's Executive Vice President Inoue Tatsuhiko was chosen as ABU Vice-President on Wednesday at the union's general meeting.

The ABU includes more than 240 broadcasters and other groups from 65 countries and regions. It organizes joint production and technological cooperation among other services.

The union held the meeting in Seoul, South Korea, from Tuesday, under the theme "What comes next?" Topics included ways to develop connections with diverse viewership and listenership as the media environment is changing significantly due to technological advances.

Along with Inoue, Mehmet Zahid Sobaci, the head of Turkish state-run TV TRT, was chosen as the new president of the ABU.

Sobaci told the members it is important to object to news reports and programs based only on a single perspective. He noted it is also significant to maintain rich content that prioritize cultural diversity and humanitarianism in content. He added that it is media's responsibility to provide a voice for those in need.

Inoue said the broadcasting industry is in the midst of a battle to survive amid a wave of digitalization. He also said he wants to share NHK's knowledge with other members and support the ABU's reform.
