The European Union has announced an inquiry into Chinese suppliers of wind turbines active in the bloc. The move comes amid its ongoing investigation into whether Chinese electric vehicles imported to the bloc received an unfair advantage due to subsidies from Beijing. European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager made the announcement on Tuesday during a speech in the United States. She expressed the EU's concern regarding China's overproduction in the renewable energy and other markets. She said, "It is not only dangerous for our competitiveness. It also jeopardizes our economic security." Vestager also said the EU is "investigating the conditions for the development of wind parks" in Spain, Greece and other member countries. In response to an inquiry from NHK, the European Commission indicated that certain Chinese wind power manufacturers active in the EU market may have gained an unfair competitive advantage through state subsidies, leading to distorted competition. The EU launched a similar investigation into Chinese manufacturers of electric vehicles in October following suspicions that state subsidies were helping them keep their prices low in the bloc. China objected, denouncing the EU for launching the probe without adequate evidence.
