Tokyo police have arrested two men on suspicion of illegally dumping industrial waste at a residential demolition site in the capital.
The suspects are both Turkish nationals -- 26-year-old Mustafa Akin, a former representative director of a demolition company in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, and an 18-year-old part-time worker.
The two allegedly dumped over 420 kilograms of debris and other waste into a hole dug at a demolition site in Tokyo's Adachi Ward in November last year.
The police say they received information in February this year that industrial waste had been buried at the site. They excavated the area and discovered debris, broken glass, plastic waste and other materials about 1.5 meters underground.
The police believe the two used heavy machinery and are investigating the details.
Both suspects have reportedly denied the allegations, saying they did not dump the waste at the site and that someone else must have discarded it.
