Japan and Australia have issued a new joint declaration on security cooperation for the next decade.
                
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio met with Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Australia&#039;s western coastal city of Perth for about two hours on Saturday morning.
                
The leaders signed the joint declaration, which is viewed as reflecting the security environment in the region, including China&#039;s increasing maritime activity.
                
The declaration underscores the significance of a rule-based order. It says that Japan and Australia will discuss a response to a contingency that could impact both countries and their surrounding areas.
                
The joint declaration also says that Japan&#039;s Self-Defense Forces and the Australian military will deepen their cooperation by conducting joint exercises and sharing facilities.
                
Kishida and Albanese confirmed they would increase cooperation to secure stable supplies of liquefied natural gas, rare metals and other resources.
                
At a joint news conference after the meeting, Kishida said the new security declaration covers how to cooperate on a range of defense and security issues over the next 10 years and will help strengthen bilateral ties.
