US President Joe Biden has announced his intention to nominate Kurt Campbell, coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council, as deputy secretary of state. The White House made the announcement on Wednesday. Campbell is well-versed in Japanese affairs. He was assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs during the administration of former President Barack Obama. He played a leading role in pursuing the "pivot to Asia" policy shifting Washington's focus to the Asia-Pacific region. After assuming the current post of coordinator, Campbell has been responsible for formulating the Biden administration's Indo-Pacific strategy. Campbell has worked to strengthen collaboration among member nations of the Quad framework with Japan, Australia and India. He was also involved in the launch of the security partnership with Britain and Australia, known as AUKUS. The post of coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council was newly created when the Biden administration was inaugurated. Campbell's nomination for the No. 2 position at the State Department highlights the administration's commitment to the Indo-Pacific region in countering China. The United States regards the country as its most serious competitor. Campbell's nomination as deputy secretary of state requires Senate confirmation. If approved, he will replace Wendy Sherman, who retired in July.
