The operator of Narita Airport near Tokyo has experimented bussing employees from a nearby residential area to the airport to make commuting easier.
                
Narita International Airport Corporation, which is already facing serious worker shortages, estimates it needs to double the number of employees to deal with more passengers when the third runway opens in 2029.
                
It takes more than 30 minutes by car to commute from the area where people it plans to recruit live, as they need to make a long detour around the runways.
                
In Sunday&#039;s experiment, the company confirmed the commuting time can nearly be halved by having a bus take roads inside the airport.
                
The head of the company&#039;s strategic planning team, Katayama Toshihiro, says the use of commuter busses can now be studied as it has proven to make commuting more convenient.
                
The company plans to launch a taskforce as early as this month to counter worker shortages.
                
The taskforce will study substantive measures to improve the convenience of commuting.
