Biden and Xi to meet in Peru on Saturday NHK

Senior US government officials say President Joe Biden will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday on the sidelines of an international meeting in Peru.

Officials told reporters on Wednesday that the talks will be held on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Lima.

They said President Biden wants to discuss military-to-military communications between the two countries.

Biden will likely emphasize the importance of maintaining peace and security across the Taiwan Strait and express concern over Chinese actions in the South China Sea.

Biden is also expected to express deep concern over the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia, where they have begun engaging in combat operations.

The leaders are also expected to discuss bilateral counter-narcotics cooperation. Fentanyl overdoses are a major problem in the US. There were a number of cases in which fentanyl, produced using materials made in China, was smuggled into the US.

The US officials said it will be two leaders' first in-person meeting since November last year, and is expected to be their last as presidents.

President-elect Donald Trump has been saying he will impose higher tariffs on Chinese imports.

The officials said President Biden will use the meeting to reflect on the progress made to help ensure stability in the bilateral relationship in the periods ahead.
