A Japanese school in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen resumed in-person classes on Monday, nearly a month after one of its students was fatally stabbed.
The 10-year-old boy was on his way to school when he was attacked by a knife-wielding man on September 18. He died the next day. The school has been holding its classes online ever since the incident.
Diplomatic sources say the school is introducing additional security measures, including posting guards at school bus stops.
The sources say children who normally walk to school will now take taxis to and from the school, and will be accompanied by their parents. The local authorities have reportedly stepped up security around the school.
Children who still feel anxious about attending classes in person and those who have temporarily returned to Japan will be able to continue taking their lessons online.
The Japanese government has been urging Beijing to get to the bottom of the attack and provide details as soon as possible. But Chinese authorities have not revealed the motive of the detained attacker or provided other details.
