US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol are expected to agree on strengthening Washington&#039;s extended deterrence against North Korea at an upcoming bilateral summit.
                
Yoon is visiting Washington as a state guest. The two countries are marking the 70th anniversary of their alliance this year.
                
In a summit due to take place on Wednesday, Biden and Yoon are expected to discuss extended deterrence amid the acceleration of North Korea&#039;s nuclear and missile development.
                
Extended deterrence refers to Washington&#039;s commitment to deter and defend US allies with its military power, including nuclear weapons.
                
A high-ranking official of the Biden administration told reporters on Tuesday that the two leaders will release a declaration on how they will prepare for unpredictable events. The official said the declaration calls for the creation of an information-sharing framework regarding nuclear arms. It reportedly incorporates possible calls at South Korean ports by US nuclear-powered submarines that can be armed with nuclear weapons.
