Speculation is swirling around the sudden dismissal of Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang. He was officially ousted from the role Tuesday after a mysterious month-long absence.

Reporters repeatedly asked a ministry spokesperson what happened. Qin still hasn't been seen in public. But officials refused to give a clear answer Wednesday.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said, "We have no information to provide. Xinhua news agency has already reported on the matter."

Qin previously served as a ministry spokesperson and as China's US ambassador. He was made foreign minister in December.

Three months later, he also became a state councilor - a post comparable to a vice premier. It was seen as an unusually speedy promotion.

Through all this, Qin was considered one of President Xi Jinping's most trusted officials.

On Chinese social media, many users were shocked by the news. Some theorized health issues - or a personal scandal - could be at play.

The foreign ministry has already removed Qin from its website. It now shows reports about the new foreign minister, Wang Yi.

Wang is Qin's predecessor and filled in during his absence. He serves as a senior Communist Party official in charge of foreign policy.

An expert on Chinese politics believes a power struggle could have been behind Qin's sudden removal.

Kobe University Associate Professor Li Hao says, "His rapid promotion likely has drawn jealousy and dissatisfaction among foreign ministry officials. I believe the appointment of Mr. Wang Yi is a temporary measure until the next minister is chosen."

Li says the sudden shake-up likely will not affect China's diplomacy.

He says President Xi still ultimately calls the shots on the country's foreign policy.
