Japanese weather officials say bands of heavy rain clouds developed over the prefectures of Ishikawa and Toyama on the Sea of Japan coast on Wednesday night. The officials are urging residents in the prefectures and surrounding areas to stay vigilant for possible mudslides and flooding. Toyama City issued an evacuation order to nearly 102,000 of its residents. That's a level-four alert on a five-tier scale. Katsuyama City in Fukui Prefecture also issued the order to its over 21,000 residents. An alert for high risks of landslides has been put in place for some areas in the prefectures of Ishikawa, Toyama, Fukui and Gifu. A level four-class flooding alert has been issued for Oyabe River in Toyama Prefecture. Some other rivers in Ishikawa, Toyama and Fukui are also in danger of flooding. Weather officials say areas mainly on the Sea of Japan side of the Kyushu to Tohoku regions could be hit by localized heavy rains with thunder. They are calling on people to be on alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers, as well as lightning and violent gusts.
