Japanese and Chinese FM agree to pursue mutually beneficial strategic relations NHK

Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko has met her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for the first time since taking office in September.

In the meeting that took place in the South Korean city of Busan on Saturday, Kamikawa strongly urged China to immediately lift the suspension on Japanese seafood imports while agreeing to find a way to resolve the issue through dialogue by having a constructive attitude and recognizing the gap between the countries' positions.

China banned Japanese seafood imports after Japan started releasing treated and diluted water from the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Kamikawa also demanded the release of Japanese nationals detained in China and the removal of a buoy placed by China in waters in Japan's exclusive economic zone.

She also expressed deep concern about the repeated intrusions by Chinese government ships into Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands, and China's stepped-up military activities with Russia.

Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan claim them.

Kamikawa also stressed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

The two ministers confirmed that they will promote mutually beneficial strategic relations that were confirmed at the last bilateral summit, and keep in close communication at all levels for building stable bilateral relations.

They invited each other to visit their respective countries which they said they would consider.

They agreed to hold security dialogue between their senior foreign and defense officials soon, and to coordinate on holding high-level economic discussions as well as talks on holding human and cultural exchanges.

Kamikawa is scheduled to meet her South Korean counterpart Park Jin on Sunday and also attend a three-way foreign ministerial meeting, which will be the first in four years.

The ministers are expected to discuss the resumption of a three-way summit.

After the meeting, Kamikawa told reporters that although there are many challenges and pending issues facing the bilateral relations, both are major powers that hold responsibility for the peace and prosperity of the region and the international community.

She said they had a serious and frank exchange of opinion, and that the meeting served as an important step towards building constructive bilateral relations.

Water used to cool molten fuel at Fukushima Daiichi has been mixing with rain and groundwater. The accumulated water is being treated to remove most radioactive substances, but still contains tritium.

Before releasing the treated water into the ocean, the plant's operator dilutes it to reduce tritium levels to about one-seventh of the World Health Organization's guidance level for drinking water.
