Japan's government says 21,818 people in the country killed themselves in 2023. The figure is down by 63 from the previous year, but includes higher numbers for young women and middle-aged and older men.
The health ministry released the statistics it compiled based on data from the National Police Agency.
Males made up 14,854 of the cases, while 6,964 were females. The number for males rose by 108 while that for females fell by 171.
The figures for males in their 30s through 70s were up, as were those for females under 30 and in their 50s. The number for women in their 20s was 921, up 110.
The total includes 13 elementary school children, 152 junior high school students and 342 high school students. The combined number for the three groups was down 7.
The figure for male students fell by 34, to 259, while that for female students rose by 27, to 248.
As for reasons, 12,336 cases were due to health problems, down 438. Economic and living difficulties followed at 5,157, up 460.
The ministry says that although the figures are preliminary, they show increases particularly among middle-aged and older men and young women and girls.
It says it will advance measures to suit the generations and genders of people who feel suicidal, and use social media and other means to encourage them to seek consultation.
