US IT giant Amazon is reportedly planning to cut up to 30,000 corporate jobs as it looks to reduce bureaucracy and managers amid growing use of artificial intelligence.
Reuters news agency reported that the layoffs may begin as early as Tuesday.
The report says the cuts would affect around 10 percent of Amazon's corporate staff across a range of operations including human resources and cloud-computing services.
Reuters cited sources as saying Amazon is acting to remedy over-hiring to meet heightened demand during the coronavirus pandemic.
The report said the job cuts would be the company's largest since it slashed roughly 27,000 positions starting in 2022.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote to employees in June, saying wider use of AI would likely lead to a further reduction in the company's workforce.
The move, if confirmed, is likely to focus attention on whether the spread of AI and automation will prompt more businesses to cut their payrolls.
