US President Joe Biden has unveiled a set of action plans to strengthen the country's supply chains. The move apparently aims at boosting economic security and curbing inflation ahead of the presidential election scheduled for November next year.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Biden announced more than 30 concrete actions.
They include setting up the Council on Supply Chain Resilience within the White House to advance the president's long-term, government-wide strategy to build enduring supply chains.
New cross-governmental supply chain data-sharing capabilities will be created to better monitor supply chains.
Based on the Defense Production Act, efforts will also be made to manufacture more essential medicines in the United States, and enable investment in domestic facilities to produce such products.
The measures come after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted US supply chains and resulted in record levels of inflation.
Biden stressed that inflation in the US has come down thanks to government measures, but added that the government has more work to do. He said prices are still too high for many families. Referring to companies that have not brought down the prices of their products, he said "It's time to stop the price gouging, giving the American consumer a break."
