Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio announced that Japanese nationals left Sudan for Djibouti on an Air Self-Defense Force aircraft on Monday. The C-2 transport aircraft took off from an airport in Port Sudan, carrying 41 Japanese nationals and four of their family members. The plane landed in Djibouti later in the day. Port Sudan is about 700 kilometers northeast of the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Sources say the Japanese evacuees traveled by land in some groups from Khartoum to the airport in Port Sudan. The evacuation operation came after fighting erupted between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group in mid-April. Kishida said four other Japanese citizens had earlier left Sudan and arrived in Djibouti or Ethiopia with help from France and others. The prime minister said there are still several Japanese nationals in Sudan who are hoping to leave. He added that the government will work to help them evacuate as soon as possible.
