A man has attacked passers-by with a knife outside of an elementary school in Beijing, injuring five people, including three minors.
Local police said the stabbing occurred on the street in the northwestern part of the city on Monday afternoon.
The victims were taken to a hospital, but their injuries are not life-threatening.
The Japanese Embassy in Beijing said there were no Japanese nationals among the injured.
The 50-year-old suspect was captured by police at the scene. A police investigation is underway.
The site of the attack is near an intersection and about 100 meters from the gate of an elementary school, which is located in a residential and commercial area.
A member of the staff of a nearby shop told NHK that the incident happened when students were leaving school. The employee said a knife-wielding man went on a stabbing spree, and that she saw three children and two parents injured. She said the scene was so chaotic that no one could approach it.
The stabbing is the latest in a series of similar attacks reported nationwide targeting schoolchildren. In September, a Japanese school student was fatally stabbed in Shenzhen while on his way to school.
The Japanese embassy is calling on Japanese nationals to be vigilant when going out.
