Japan, Timor-Leste agree to step up security cooperation NHK

Japan and the Southeast Asian country of Timor-Leste have agreed to strengthen cooperation on national security through a Japanese framework offering defense equipment.

Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and President Jose Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste, previously known as East Timor, held a summit meeting in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Timor-Leste will officially join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in October. Ishiba said Japan will continue to support Timor-Leste's efforts after it joins ASEAN. He said Japan will work closely with Timor-Leste on international and regional issues to further deepen comprehensive partnership.

Ramos-Horta responded that his country welcomes the partnership between the two countries.

The two leaders agreed to step up security cooperation by making use of Japan's Official Security Assistance program, or OSA. The program offers defense equipment and other material to like-minded countries.

They also confirmed cooperation in various fields, including maritime security, industry diversification and the economy.
