Japan's October visitors set new monthly record NHK

Japan's fall foliage season has been attracting record numbers of overseas visitors. Arrivals in October hit an all-time high for a single month.

The Japan National Tourism Organization estimates that the country had more than 3.3 million inbound visitors. The seasonal shades pushed up the overall figure.

By country or region, South Korea topped the list, with more than 732,000 travelers arriving in Japan.
It was followed by China at about 580,000, Taiwan at nearly 479,000 and the US at over 278,000.
The number of visitors from China more than doubled from the same month last year.

The October figures brought this year's total so far to more than 30.1 million. That's the earliest the 30-million-mark has been breached.

The head of the Japan Tourism Agency, Haraikawa Naoya, points out that visitors from Western countries have increased by around 60 percent compared to 2019, before the pandemic.
He said he hopes the positive trend can continue.
