The UN's humanitarian affairs chief has indicated the body is pleased that a humanitarian aid convoy has been allowed to enter the Gaza Strip through the territory's border with Egypt.
In a statement issued on Saturday, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said, "We welcome today's announcement that an aid convoy has entered Gaza."
He noted that the 20 trucks in the convoy are carrying life-saving supplies. Griffiths added that the vehicles were allowed to pass through the Rafah border crossing in order to get to Gaza.
He also said, "This delivery will be the start of a sustainable effort to provide essential supplies---including food, water, medicine and fuel---to the people of Gaza."
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, released a post on X. He said, "WHO health supplies will finally be moving towards Gaza through the Rafah crossing."
The WHO issued a press release on Saturday. It said, "Four trucks carrying WHO health supplies have started to move towards the Rafah border crossing, on their way to Gaza." It said trauma medicines are among the supplies that the trucks are transporting.
The organization called for "the protection of aid convoys and humanitarian teams in Gaza as they work to ensure the safe delivery of these supplies to where they are most needed."
The WHO noted that "the supplies currently heading into Gaza will barely begin to address the escalating health needs." It called for "a scaled up, sustained and protected humanitarian operation."
