US President Joe Biden traveled to the southern border with Mexico and met with patrol agents and asylum officers on Thursday. His trip to Brownsville, Texas, came on the same day that former President Donald Trump visited another city close by.
The visits happened ahead of Super Tuesday on March 5, when voters in about one-third of states choose the candidates they want for the 2024 presidential election.
The number of people trying to cross the border into the US illegally has reached record highs during Biden's presidency. He supported a bipartisan bill in Congress that would have tightened security. Trump, however, called it a "bad" deal and, a few weeks ago, most Republicans voted against the package.
Biden criticized Trump for going against the legislation just because he does not want to "benefit the incumbent." He added that it was a "hell of a way to do business in America for such a serious problem."
Trump has made immigration a priority. He went to the city of Eagle Pass and checked installations that Texas Governor Greg Abbott put in place to prevent migrants from entering. He vowed that, if he wins the presidential election, he will begin the "largest deportation" operation in US history.
Trump said, "The United States is being overrun by the Biden migrant crime. It's a new form of vicious violation to our country."
More and more Americans are voicing their concerns. In a recent survey from Gallup, immigration surged to the top of their list of "most important" problems. Republicans have suggested that Biden "is chasing" Trump to the border after years of neglecting the problem.
