Japanese weather officials have issued a heavy rain emergency warning -- the highest level alert -- for Oita Prefecture following one for Fukuoka Prefecture. Both are in northern Kyushu. Landslides have occurred and rivers have flooded in the region. People in the region are advised to remain on maximum alert. The officials say the seasonal rain front around Japan's main island of Honshu will likely remain almost stationary through Tuesday, bringing heavy precipitation to wide swathes of the Sea of Japan coast. Some parts of northern Kyushu and neighboring Yamaguchi Prefecture are expected to see torrential rainfall measuring 70 millimeters per hour through Monday evening. In the 24-hour period through Tuesday morning, up to 200 millimeters of rain is forecast for northern Kyushu, 180 for Yamaguchi and 100 for the Chugoku region. People in Fukuoka, Saga and Oita prefectures, where flooding and landslides have taken place, are advised to exercise maximum caution. Officials are urging residents to move to upper floors and stay in rooms not facing mountain slopes to ensure their safety.
