Pakistan arrests suicide attack suspects NHK

Authorities in Pakistan have arrested more than 10 suspects in connection with a suicide attack last week.

The bombing targeted Chinese engineers working on a major dam construction project in the country's northwest. It's the latest in a series of attacks believed to be in response to China's growing influence in the country.

A car loaded with explosives rammed into a convoy last Tuesday in a mountainous area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Five Chinese engineers and their Pakistani driver were killed.

Local media outlets say some of the suspects have links with militant groups affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban. Investigators reportedly say the bomber and the vehicle used in the attack were from Afghanistan.

On Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the construction site where the convoy was headed. He vowed to fight terrorism and defeat the enemies of Pakistan and China.

Pakistan has launched a range of infrastructure projects under China's Belt and Road initiative. But several recent attacks, including a separate one at a port facility last month, are believed to have been carried out by armed groups disgruntled with China.
