The United Nations Security Council has decided to end the UN peacekeeping operation in southern Lebanon by December 31, 2026. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, was created in 1978 to monitor Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon and the cessation of hostilities. Its mandate has been renewed every year since UNIFIL was created. But the United States had been expressing its reluctance to support a renewal of the mandate, and Israel had been criticizing UNIFIL for overlooking the Shia Muslim group Hezbollah's activities in Lebanon. On Thursday, the UNSC unanimously adopted a resolution that extends the mandate for the last time. The mandate will expire on December 31, 2026. UNIFIL personnel will begin to withdraw on that date, and the force will complete its withdrawal within one year. Acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea welcomed the adoption of the resolution. She said it is a "historic vote, which brings an end to the UNIFIL mandate in a responsible, orderly, and time-bound manner." The resolution calls for the Lebanese government to maintain security in southern Lebanon. But Hezbollah remains a powerful force there. The Israeli military has remained in southern Lebanon, even though a ceasefire with Hezbollah came into effect in November of 2024. Observers have voiced concerns. They say that ending the peacekeeping operation could create a vacuum. They also say that it could affect the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, and the situation in the region. ---------------- Quiz 1: What is the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) initially created for?
