Sukiya chain blames rice costs as it raises beef-bowl prices NHK

Soaring rice costs in Japan are driving up prices at restaurants, including budget-friendly "gyudon" beef-bowl eateries.
The Sukiya restaurant chain says it will raise prices of its gyudon offerings by as much as 50 yen, or about 30 cents. The popular dishes are typically a bowl of rice topped with sliced beef.

About half the items on the Sukiya menu will see price increases from Tuesday. The chain operator Zensho Holdings says this reflects higher rice and beef costs.

The regular-size gyudon dish will go up 6.6 percent or 30 yen to 480 yen.

Sukiya also raised beef-bowl prices in November last year, citing rice costs.

The operator says it may buy supplies of the grain from government stockpiles if the quality meets its standards.

Other family restaurants and conveyor-belt sushi outlets are raising prices and blaming rice costs.
Summary
Rising rice and beef costs in Japan have led to price hikes at Japanese restaurants, particularly budget-friendly gyudon eateries like Sukiya. The chain will increase gyudon prices by up to 50 yen due to these increased costs. Half of the menu items will see a price increase from Tuesday.
