The Japan Coast Guard is suspending its Haneda Air Station personnel from operating aircraft for the time being, to ensure safety and provide psychological care after this month&#039;s fatal crash involving one of its planes.
                
On January 2, a Japan Airlines passenger jet collided with a coast guard aircraft on a runway at Tokyo&#039;s Haneda Airport immediately after the jetliner touched down. Both burst into flames.
                
All 379 people aboard the JAL plane evacuated, and 15 passengers received medical treatment. Five of the six crew on the coast guard aircraft died, and the other was seriously injured.
                
The coast guard says its Haneda Air Station has jurisdiction over a vast expanse of waters off the coastline between Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, and Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan.
                
The coast guard said that while the station&#039;s personnel are grounded, it will cover the jurisdiction using unmanned aerial vehicles and other aircraft belonging to nearby coast guard facilities.
                
The Haneda Air Station has two helicopters and three fixed-wing planes. A fourth plane was wrecked in the crash.
                
The coast guard says its personnel from other facilities will use the station&#039;s operable aircraft.
                
Following the accident, the coast guard took emergency measures, instructing its facilities across the country to hold safety enhancement meetings and check aircraft operation manuals.
