Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te posted a message on social media on the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident on Wednesday.



He said that commemorating the June 4 incident "is not only to mourn history, but also to continue this memory."



He also said authoritarian governments often choose to remain silent and forget history, while democratic societies preserve the truth and refuse to forget those who sacrificed themselves to contribute to the ideals of human rights.



Lai added that after 36 years, the threat posed by authoritarianism is still a challenge that the international community must jointly respond to.



He said that Taiwan stands at the forefront of the global defense of democracy and will continue to work shoulder to shoulder with all like-minded partners to firmly uphold the status quo and safeguard democracy and freedom.
