Klimt's 'Lady with a Fan' sold for record $108 million NHK

A portrait of an unnamed woman by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt has fetched the highest price for any work of art auctioned in Europe.

"Lady with a Fan" was sold in London on Tuesday for 85.3 million pounds with fees, or 108.4 million dollars, to a Hong Kong collector.

The painting is said to have been on an easel in Klimt's studio when he died in 1918. It depicts an unidentified woman, bare-shouldered against a backdrop showing lotus blossoms and a Chinese phoenix.

The previous highest price for any artwork sold at auction in Europe was set by Alberto Giacometti's bronze sculpture "Walking Man I," which went under the hammer for 65 million pounds in 2010.
