Sapporo revises management plan for Olympics it aims to host in 2030 NHK

Sapporo in northern Japan has drawn up an updated version of a management plan for the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, which the city is bidding to host.

Officials of the Hokkaido Prefectural capital on Tuesday submitted the draft plan to a panel of experts for review. The revision comes in the wake of bribery scandals emerging from the recent Tokyo Games.

In the summer Olympics held in Japan's capital, a single company was designated the point of contact for firms hoping to become Olympic sponsors. This arrangement is thought to have led to wrongdoing.

The revised Sapporo plan calls for such marketing responsibilities to be assigned to several companies rather than a single firm.

It also says that their operations should be overseen by the Olympics and Paralympics organizing committee.

The number of organizing committee directors should be about half that of the Tokyo body, according to the draft, and 50 percent should be female.

Some members of the panel expressed support for the revised plan. Others said even if several companies were assigned responsibility for marketing, one firm could become dominant. They said the companies' ability to monitor each other's activities might be limited if this were to take place.

City officials aim to settle on the details of the plan by the end of this month at the earliest.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Sapporo Mayor Akimoto Katsuhiro noted the inclusion of specific numbers for such things as the board of directors and the percentage of female directors.

He said this made it more detailed than an earlier document offering suggestions for avoiding the problems associated with the Tokyo Games. He stressed the city's determination to learn from Tokyo's example and raise standards.
Summary
Sapporo, Japan has proposed a revised management plan for the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The revision aims to address bribery scandals in light of the Tokyo Games by assigning marketing responsibilities to several companies instead of one, with oversight from the organizing committee.
