Western media outlets say the United States and Ukraine have reached a broad agreement on a minerals deal, but without any security guarantees from the US. US President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be visiting the US on Friday. Trump has been demanding a right to Ukraine's rare earths and other mineral resources in return for US assistance to the country. Britain's Financial Times reported that the final version of the agreement mentioned Ukraine would contribute 50 percent of future proceeds from state-owned mineral resources to a fund it will establish. The newspaper quoted Ukrainian officials as saying Kyiv was ready to sign after the US dropped demands for a right to 500 billion dollars in potential revenue from the deal. But the Financial Times also said the agreement did not make any reference to US security guarantees that Kyiv had been insisting on. Ukraine apparently wants to keep bilateral relations from souring further. Attention is focused on how the US will proceed with the security guarantees that Ukraine seeks.
