Construction of a new rail line to Haneda Airport to start in June NHK

East Japan Railway Company says it will start construction in June on one of the rail lines planned to improve access to Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

The company plans three new rail routes to connect the airport with the center of the capital city and other areas. The project is a response to an expected increase in foreign tourists.

One of the three routes will directly connect Tokyo Station and the airport via the Tokyo Freight Terminal in Shinagawa Ward.

The firm announced on Tuesday that construction will begin in June. Commercial operations are slated to start in 2031.

The new service will shorten the travel time from Tokyo Station to the airport from 30 minutes to about 18 minutes. Passengers now have to change trains to other lines such as a monorail to get to Haneda.

Commercial services had been planned to start in 2029, but the date was postponed after construction methods for tunnels and other sections were reexamined.

The two other routes in the project will directly connect to the airport from Shinjuku and Shinkiba stations, both in Tokyo.

JR East's President Fukasawa Yuji stressed the importance of Haneda Airport for Japan's future development. He said his company wants to contribute in the transportation sector, noting that passenger numbers, including foreign tourists, are expected to rise after the steep decline during the coronavirus pandemic.
