Case sent to prosecutors for online slander of deceased wrestler's mother NHK

Tokyo police have sent papers to prosecutors on a man in his 40s for suspected online slander of the mother of a reality TV star who committed suicide in 2020.

The police say they referred the man living in Aichi Prefecture to prosecutors for suspected defamation on Friday.

Professional wrestler Kimura Hana took her own life after being attacked on social media for her conduct and remarks in a TV reality show. She was 22.

Her mother, Kimura Kyoko, has been campaigning against cyberbullying to prevent recurrences. She herself has become a target of online defamation.

In response to her criminal complaint, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has been trying to find those who posted the malicious comments.

The police suspect the man in Aichi made such a comment on an online message board in September 2020.

Three other men were earlier referred to prosecutors for suspected defamation or insult in connection with their online comments about Hana's mother.
