New US nuclear power plant starts commercial operation NHK

A new nuclear reactor has entered commercial operation in the US state of Georgia. US regulators says it is the first such facility to be built from scratch since the 1979 accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant.

Georgia Power on Monday announced Plant Vogtle Unit 3 had begun commercial operation. The manufacturer, Westinghouse Electric Company, says the pressurized water reactor has a nominal net electricity output of about 1,110 megawatts.

Georgia Power says it can power an estimated 500,000 homes and businesses, and will provide clean, reliable energy for the next 60 to 80 years.

Nuclear energy provides about 20 percent of power generation in the United States. Currently, 93 reactors at 54 locations are in operation.

In 2016, a nuclear plant in Tennessee became the first US reactor to enter commercial operation in 20 years. Its construction had been delayed by the Three Mile Island accident.
